Alexander Zverev races part Nishesh Basavareddy in Cincinnati

World no. 3 Alexander Zverev is safely through to the third round in Cincinnati. The 2021 champion faced Nishesh Basavareddy in the second round and earned a 6-3, 6-3 victory in 66 minutes.

Thus, the German secured his 40th victory of the season, achieving that for the eighth time in the previous ten seasons. The favorite claimed 13 points more than the home player.

The 3rd seed served at 82% and dropped 14 points in nine service games. He faced no break points and kept the pressure on the other side. Nishesh served at 51% and lost 41% of the points in his games.

Basavareddy played against three break points and failed to save any. Alexander landed 21 winners and 18 unforced errors. He forged a 28-14 advantage in service winners and earned the win in that segment.

Zverev provided four fine holds in the first set and provided two breaks. The young American built a 40-15 lead in the fifth game of the match before dropping four straight points and losing serve after a forced error.

Nishesh served to stay in the set at 3-5 and netted a backhand, losing serve for the second time and allowing world no. 3 to wrap up the opener 6-3 in 31 minutes. The German continued to serve well in the second set.

The American stayed in touch in the first part of the set before facing issues at 2-3. Alexander stepped in and provided a break at 15 with a forced error, moving 4-2 in front and closer to the finish line. 

The German cemented the break with a forehand winner in game seven and served for the win at 5-3. The former champion landed an ace, sealing the deal in style and making a winning start.

Bianca Andreescu went through a painful moment very late in her Montreal opener as the former world No. 4 badly rolled her ankle on a match point. 

Serving for the match at 5-3 in the second set against 2024 Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova, the Canadian twisted her ankle and fell on the court instantly. Moments after the injury scare, the 2019 US Open winner yelled, "Why does this always happen to me?"

Andreescu, who was in evident pain and discomfort, was assisted to her bench, where she was treated by the trainer. Ultimately, the Canadian – who received a wildcard for this year's tournament in Montreal – managed to resume play and complete a 6-3 6-4 win.

The Montreal crowd prompted the 25-year-old to continue playing and gave her the extra energy. And after the current world No. 187 managed to get over the finish line, she became emotional but also acknowledged the crowd's help.

"You guys are everything. I'm super happy I was able to pull through and it's thanks to you guys," the home player told the crowd.

Andreescu's injury history is well-documented as she has struggled with various injuries over the last several years. 

After taking part in the Tokyo tournament in 2024 October, the Canadian decided to take a break to address her back injury. The 25-year-old returned to action in April. Since coming back to tennis, she has posted a 12-8 record and she is ranked just inside the top-200.

In the Montreal second round, Andreescu is due to meet Mirra Andreeva. It remains to be seen if tshe will be impacted by the ankle injury.

Washington: Alejandro Davidovich Fokina bests Ben Shelton

Alejandro Davidovich Fokina will chase his first ATP title in a career in Washngton. The Spaniard bested Ben Shelton 6-2, 7-5 in the semi-final in an hour and 19 minutes, advancing to his fourth ATP final and the third of the season.

Davidovich Fokina left the home star behind in the opening set and grabbed three straight games in the closing stages of the second set for a notable victory. Alejandro will crack the top-20 with these points, regardless of the final outcome.

The Spaniard is 8-0 against left-handers in 2025. He is also the fourth player with five top-10 victories this season, joining Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti on the exclusive list.

Ben could not produce the magic behind the initial shot from the previous matches. He served at 55% and dropped42% of the points in his games. The home player faced six break points and got broken four times. 

Alejandro dropped 14 points in ten service games, suffering one break in the second set and outplaying his rival. They sprayed too many unforced errors. The Spaniard tamed his strokes more efficiently and bested the top-10 star from the baseline. 

They stayed neck and neck in the quickest exchange up to four strokes, and the lower-ranked player had the upper hand in the more advanced ones. Davidovich Fokina made a reliable start.

He served well in the opener and kept the pressure on the other side. Shelton sprayed a forehand error in the fifth game, losing serve and falling behind. The Spaniard cemented the lead with a forehand down the line winner in the next one.

A left-hander struggled again on serve in game seven and netted a forehand to experience another break and fall 5-2 behind. Alejandro landed an ace in the eighth game, wrapping up the opening set 6-2 in 27 minutes.

Ben played against a break point at 2-2 in the second set and saved it with a service winner. However, he played a loose drop shot two games later, losing serve and sending his rival 4-3 in front.

The Spaniard played his only loose service game in the next one, placing a forehand wide and losing serve to bring the home favorite back to the positive side. 

Shelton sprayed a backhand error in the 11th game and got broken when his opponent painted a forehand down the line winner. Davidovich Fokina served for the win at 6-5 and fired a powerful serve for a hold at 15 and his fourth ATP final, the third of the season.
